Fall 2018 Dietetics News Round-Up

Presentations

Qingyi Zhang, MA, RD, a recent graduate of the MA in FCS with concentration in dietetics presented a research poster at 蜜桃社区鈥檚 12th Annual Research and Creative Activities Poster and Performance Day on Thursday, April 12, 2018. Her poster that was co-authored by Drs. Arezoo Rojhani and Angel Gullon- Rivera placed among the top 20 and was selected for a cash prize.

Dr. Rojhani presented a poster titled 鈥淒ietary and Health related Behaviors of WIC Enrolled Pregnant Women鈥 at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior national conference in Minneapolis on July 21, 2018. The poster was co-authored by Drs. Angel Gullon-Rivera and Sunmin Lee, and recent graduate of the MA in FCS with dietetics concentration Qingyi Zhang.

Program proposal entitled 鈥淎ddressing the root causes of antibiotic resistance; the role of educators, researchers, health care practitioners and food producers鈥 has been accepted for presentation at the 2019 Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior annual conference in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Caroline Webber is the session organizer.

Student dietetic association

In October, members from the Student Dietetic Association teamed up with local dietitians from the South West Michigan District Dietetic Association at Gull Meadow Farms to celebrate Apple Crunch Day and harvest local apples to donate to Feeding America.

Lauren Johnson, president of the 蜜桃社区 Student Dietetic Associations and student board member for the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics attended the Academy's Fall conference and spoke at the session on student involvement in the dietetic profession.

The Student Dietetic Association members prepared four monthly meals (September-December, 2018) made with fresh ingredients at the Kalamazoo Friends (Quaker Meeting House) in the west Douglas neighborhood. The meals were served to low-income families in the neighborhood.

Program news

At its January 8 meeting the Undergraduate Studies Council approved to Change the name of the undergraduate program in Dietetics to Nutrition and Dietetics.

Dr. Ping Quyang joined the dietetics program as a full time tenure-track faculty member in August 2018. Dr. Quyang is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. She completed her Ph.D. in Human Nutrition at Kansas State University followed by two post-doctoral appointments, one at the NIH鈥檚 National Cancer Institute and another Oklahoma State University.
