General summary
Performs all tasks related to the intellectual property operations of the University. Manages all intellectual property disclosures and protection (i.e., patent and copyright activities), including the planning, coordinating, and evaluation of intellectual property, technology transfer, and potential research commercialization activities for the University.
Major duties
- Identifies, evaluates, and protects researcher's intellectual properties, including outreach to faculty to stimulate disclosures. Guides faculty on protection processes.
- Evaluates prior art and intellectual property patent research activities. Has extensive interaction with patent attorneys and intellectual property consultants.
- Assists with determination of possible commercial value and licensing opportunities.
- Oversees intellectual property database and contract management systems. Provides data and cost analyses of intellectual property, patents, and copyrights as needed.
- Ensures compliance with appropriate laws, regulations, and University policies and advises staff as necessary.
- Completes operational planning and procedures. Provides oversight of University websites and updating.
- May participate in various University committees.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Experience in the management, evaluation, or commercialization of intellectual property.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of university-based intellectual property and intellectual property background research.
- Working Knowledge of law and legal issues affecting protection and use of intellectual property.
- Working knowledge of the preparation and review of patent documents.

Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
