General summary
Provides strategy for and develops procedures related to intellectual property, technology transfer, and research commercialization for the University.
Major duties
- Manages intellectual property disclosure evaluation and patent strategy. Collaborates with faculty inventors and patent counsel.
- Prepares, processes, reviews, negotiates and tracks contracts associated with external funding awards through stages of initial development to approval by all parties. Assures compliance with appropriate law, regulations, and policies.
- Oversees the licensing and commercialization of the University鈥檚 intellectual property.
- Supports University's technology transfer and economic development activities.
- Prepares correspondence to sponsors requesting contract modification and supports negotiated activities.
- Develops and provides resources regarding contracts for faculty and staff, including professional development.
- Consults with sponsors, sub-awardees, principal investigators and internal constituents, to identify and negotiate contracts associated with external funding.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Eight years' relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in research administration, corporate relations, and building connections among organizations related to research and intellectual property.
- Working knowledge of intellectual property law and legal issues affecting protection, use, licensing and exploitation of early stage life science inventions.
- Experience with budgets, project planning, and management.
- Ability to interact professionally with sponsors, researchers, faculty, and administrators.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities at a time, while maintaining a strong attention to detail.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
