IMPROVING MATHEMATICS PEDAGOGY AND CONTENT FOR TEACHERS (IMPACT)鈥擬ATH/SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

- Description: Improving Mathematics Pedagogy and Content for Teachers (IMPACT) is a project funded by the Michigan Mathematics and Science Partnership competitive grants program of the Michigan Department of Education. The purpose of the project is to implement an 80-hour mathematics content course designed for K-8 teachers called Intel庐 Math. The course is being implemented by the Manistee, Wexford-Missaukee Regional Mathematics and Science Center and the following partner sites: Mecosta-Osceola Mathematics/Science/Technology Center, and the Grand Traverse Regional Math, Science & Technology Center. It is designed to deepen the teacher participant knowledge of elementary and middle school math concepts and emphasizes a problem-solving approach.

- Description: SAMPI provided comprehensive external evaluation services to this Michigan Mathematics and Science Center Partnership grant. Evaluation activities included: development and analysis of teacher surveys, development, administration, and analysis of a teacher pre/post mathematics content test and a teacher video pre/post test, analysis of NWEA testing data, interviews with teachers, administrators, and project staff, and observation of professional development sessions. SAMPI participated in regular project staff meetings to share results of the data collection and analysis, as well as provided regular written reports.

MICHIGAN'S UPPER PENINSULA SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS INTEGRATED THROUGH LITERACY AND ENGINEERING (UP SMILE)鈥揗ATH/SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

- Description: The Upper Peninsula Science and Mathematics Integrated through Literacy and Engineering (UP-SMILE) project is funded by the Michigan Department of Education鈥檚 Mathematics and Science Partnership competitive grants program. The purpose of UP-SMILE is to support the efforts of middle and high school teachers across Michigan鈥檚 Upper Peninsula to bring an integrated approach to their mathematics and science classrooms. Five Upper Peninsula Mathematics and Science Centers have partnered to implement a 10-day workshop for secondary teachers focused on 3-D printers, Scratch programming, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Vernier probes. Additionally, participants attended a 5-day workshop series on NGSX, a web-based system designed to engage them in the three major dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): core ideas of science, scientific and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. UP SMILE also received expansion funding to implement three Math Recovery庐 trainings in the Upper Peninsula. Math Recovery庐 consists of two courses designed to provide a detailed understanding of how children develop understanding of early numeracy (Course 1) and number domains of place value and multiplication and division (Course 2).

Description: Achieving with Intel庐 Math (AIM) is a project funded by the Michigan Mathematics and Science Partnership competitive grants program of the Michigan Department of Education. There have been three phases of the project and an extension of the third phase through the Saginaw Valley State University Regional Mathematics and Science Center. AIM is the fourth phase. The project is implementing the 80-hour Intel庐 Math course designed for K-8 teachers. Topics covered in the course include integer arithmetic, the decimal number system, place value, rational number arithmetic, rates, linear equations, functions, and more. The course material is taught to K-8 teacher
